Welcome to the December 2009 edition of TIRES e-news, a periodic newsletter brought to you by the health and safety experts of the TIRES Initiative.

Truck drivers are independent workers. Therefore, it may seem to employers that their drivers' safety is outside the company's control. However, keeping drivers safe is a team investment - the company, the driver and the customer are all responsible for keeping the work environment safe. Below are safety tools that may be helpful in broaching these tricky conversations.

Read a short report that includes tips to protect drivers at the customer site short report (331 KB). Attached are two versions of a checklist that customers can use to improve the safety of their delivery bays. Make copies and send with customer correspondence checklist version A (184 KB), checklist version B (208 KB).

The Trucking Injury Reduction Emphasis (TIRES) project was developed by the Safety and Health Assessment and Research for Prevention (SHARP) program of Washington's Department of Labor and Industries.

The Trucking Injury Reduction Emphasis (TIRES) project team and the TIRES steering committee are working with the Washington State trucking industry to identify causes for the most frequent injuries to develop effective strategies for preventing them.

The TIRES steering committee is made up of a diverse group of professionals that includes: drivers, safety people from large and small trucking companies, labor and business associations, insurers and a representative from a publicly funded truck driving school.
